Sixth Graders Become Environmental Explorers on Class Trip

By Intermediate and Middle School STEM and Coding Teacher John Navin
Parker’s 6th grade recently embarked on their first class trip to the beautiful Indiana Dunes National Park, a tradition that Parker students have enjoyed for decades. The park is home to diverse ecosystems, vibrant wildflowers and the stunning sand dunes that give the area its name.

During the trip, students participated in environmental education programs at the Dunes Learning Center. These programs explore the natural, cultural, historical and recreational resources of the Indiana Dunes.

Working in teams, students developed research questions and headed out on hikes to collect data. At the end of the trip, they presented their findings to National Park Rangers.

Stepping outside of one’s comfort zone is a vital part of learning, and the dunes create a safe, beautiful space that supports that growth.

Environmental education plays an important role in shaping young minds. In addition to fostering a sense of care and responsibility for the natural world, there is a link to improved academic achievement.
