As a culminating activity of the 7th grade study of ancient Latin America, History teacher Alex Munro collaborated with Computer Science teacher Seth Bacon to infuse some current tech tools into their study of long ago.
Munro challenged his students to use Tinkercad on their iPads to design a 3D replica of either Chichen Itza pyramids, Machu Picchu or Olmec heads. Munro wanted to push his students to think about using angles, perspective and shape using the software, and Bacon was on hand to assist students with their creations. In developing their designs, Munro pushed students to recall specific aspects of their specific replica that tied to a civilization they learned about.
Students reacted positively to the assignment. Seventh grader Arden shared that they enjoyed the problem-solving aspects, independent work and fun of the project, and Daisy said she liked the fact that the assignment was so different and interactive.
Munro offered, “The project is a nice keepsake for students to remember various aspects of what they learned about different ancient Latin American civilizations.”
Parker sends kudos for the great work infusing the study of the past with the tools of the present for the benefit of everyone.
