Phaedrus, Parker’s Upper School literary and art magazine, allows students to creatively express themselves through poetry, short stories, drawing, photography and paintings. At Morning Ex last week, the Phaedrus staff spoke about the process of bringing the magazine to life and encouraged other students to submit their work.
Phaedrus is a Student Government committee with four heads— seniors Delilah Davis and Ava Lin, junior B Hirsch and sophomore Wallace Davis—who described the history and evolution of the magazine. They spoke about the editing process and how the staff organizes the content most effectively. They also noted that they’ve recently begun adding artist biographies alongside their works to help build community and honor each contributor.
This year, there will be only one issue to have a more robust collection of works, and for the first time ever, the staff will gather submissions from other schools that may not have a creative outlet like Phaedrus.
Members of the staff then shared examples of work they have submitted or plan to submit for the next issue, including paintings of cars, portraits, photography featuring architecture and landscapes and original poetry. Some students created their art on their own time, and others used works they had already completed for classes. The staff strongly encouraged all Upper School students to consider submitting any and all of their work as each artist may offer up to three submissions.
In addition to the celebration of art, Phaedrus provides a welcoming space for all. Senior Phoebe Stranahan said, “I was a new student last year, and Phaedrus has given me the opportunity to meet so many creative and supportive high school students.”
Parker looks forward to seeing the new issue this coming spring and hopes to see a wide variety of work that showcases students’ unique perspectives and inspired creativity.
