Middle School Social Justice Club Raises Money and the Roof—Gingerbread Roofs!

The MS Social Justice Club’s work never stops. The club has gotten off to a fast start by sponsoring a bake sale last month. A bevy of sweet treats were available for $1 each, and students raised more than $400 for a local immigrant family who needs some support during these changing times. Anyone who missed the bake sale and would like to contribute should contact the club sponsors David Fuder (dfuder@fwparker.org) and Karen Liszka (kliszka@fwparker.org) for more information.

Meanwhile, the club turned right around and donated their time and talents to spread some holiday cheer. For the seventh year, the group gathered 20 other MS classmates after school last week and pre-fabbed gingerbread houses. The club then donated the houses, construction candies and frosting to Be Alright, a support network for domestic violence shelters across the city. The gingerbread houses and materials went to a local domestic violence shelter for their annual family holiday party, where victims of domestic violence and their children decorated the houses together. Be Alright was thrilled to receive the 50 houses that 27 Parker students constructed, as well as the sugary sweets with which to decorate. They sent a few photos of the revelry experienced by all. The MS students are happy to see how their houses were decorated and so glad to know the families had so much fun. Finally, the club invites any MS student interested in creating positive change at the school and in the community to join. The MS Social Justice Club meets every Thursday morning starting at 7:30 a.m. in Room 347. Breakfast is provided. No experience is required, just a desire to reach out and affect social change. Anyone with questions may reach out to sponsors Fuder and Liszka.
