Lower School Final Shop Projects Shine Bright

Students in 1st and 3rd grades have been hard at work with LS Woodshop teacher Alexandra Harmel. Read below to learn about these projects in Harmel’s own words.

First Grade Self-Portrait Puppets
The final project for 1st grade students was to create a self-portrait puppet. Students learned how to use the coping saw to create straight and curved cuts to saw all the pieces of their puppet. After sanding and coloring each piece, students created a background. The final step required students to use a manual drill to add holes into each body part and insert a dowel rod that allowed the pieces to move.

Third Grade Automatas
Students in 3rd grade created automatas, a kinetic sculpture operated by cranking the gears, for their final project. Students began by brainstorming a story they would tell through their work: who was moving, what were they doing, where did it take place, and why was this happening? Students used a miter saw to cut the base and a manual drill to create the holes. After gluing the base walls together, students sawed and rasped pieces of soft basswood, added dowel rods and used mixed media to develop a location that tied everything together.

Good work to all of these students.
