7th Graders Bring French Flair to Junior Kindergarten

Middle School French students met with a Junior Kindergarten class to share original children’s stories they had written and designed for their class.

French teacher Cynthia Marker regularly brings her Upper School language students to Tisha Johnson’s JK classroom to establish and foster bonds between older and younger students and allow them to share with and learn from one another.

Seventh grade French students have been working in groups to write original children’s books using their emergent language skills. They then used Canva to bring their stories to life with dramatic illustration and color with help from ILIS department members Seth Bacon and Nora Wiltse. These books needed an audience, and Marker knew some JKers who are always down for a good story.

The 7th grade French students’ visit to JK began with a French song that the JKers were already familiar with based on Marker’s prior visits during the year. Older students, dispersed in groups around the classroom with printed copies of their books, were excited to share their stories, original artwork and smiles with their new JK buddies.
