Interdisciplinary Project Looks Back to Look Forward

By LS and IS Spanish teacher Karen Liszka and Visual Arts teacher Kay Silva
As we work as a community to educate our school progressively into the future, we must also remember and recognize those who contributed their voices, skills and hard work in our past. Validating the importance of Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor those of Hispanic descent whose efforts as farmworkers have helped feed and nourish us, our community and our country.

In a new, interdisciplinary unit between 4th grade Art and Spanish classes, students have been busy seeing, thinking and wondering about the concepts of culture and heritage. This semester, Art and Spanish students will study the Mayan Empire as they compare and contrast the ancient indigenous Mesoamerican cultures to the ancient European cultures they will encounter in their homeroom Central Topic studies.

To kick off this collaboration, we combine and display students’ efforts to showcase the Spanish, Nahuatl and English languages through visual symbolism using words related to farming, agriculture and nature. This display is inspired by the art and language of the ancient Mayan people to honor their influences and history that link their past with our present for National Hispanic Heritage Month.
