Enrichment and Immersion in Upper School Mandarin

By Mandarin teacher Gina Dong
On April 16, Mandarin students took a field trip to Chicago’s Chinatown. The day began at the Chinese American Museum, where students learned about the history of Chinatown and the struggles and contributions of early Chinese immigrants. They explored the Race Making: American Advertising Trade Cards and Chinese Identity exhibit, which highlighted how Chinese identity was portrayed in 19th-century America.

Students also enjoyed modern art displays and experienced authentic Southern Chinese cuisine with a delicious dim sum meal. The trip ended with a visit to new Chinatown shops before taking the Red Line back to school.

This immersive experience enriched students’ understanding of Chinese culture and history, complementing their Mandarin studies.
