Cookies Class Travels to the Heart of the Civil Rights Movement

By US History Department Chair Andy Bigelow
During Cookies, 25 seniors, Ms. Shepard, Ms. Pantoja and I dove into the heart of the Civil Rights Movement. Guided by our leader, Dr. Martha Bouyer (Out of the Box Tours), we flew into Jackson, Mississippi and traveled north through the Mississippi Delta until we reached Memphis, Tennessee.

Our trip included incredible sites, museums and places that are considered hallowed ground in the struggle for civil rights. Among the places we visited was the National Civil Rights Museum, which is housed in the Lorraine Hotel, the site of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination; we had opportunities to meet with veterans and witnesses of the movement, as well as take advantage of Dr. Bouyer’s historical knowledge.
