SK Students Become Playwrights

Students from SK-Kirk flexed their creative minds and their work with LS Drama teacher Dana O’Brien to create and perform two plays they created entirely through improvisation.

“Each group began with characters they would like to play,” SK teacher Kirkland La Rue explained. “Each person volunteered to get on stage and become their character while having a conversation with the other characters on stage. Through that, we used the storytelling skills we have developed in Drama class to think about what would happen next.

“With this process we formed the outline of a story, knowing the order of the scenes and what would happen within each scene. Each time we rehearsed it, it was different but the same story was told (basically) every time. This allows children to play within a set structure, take ownership of their character and their character’s part in the story and gain a fuller understanding of the concept that there is not just one way to do something.”

After many rehearsals, SK-Kirk invited their families and the Parker community to a special performance followed by a reception in their classroom. All had smiles on their faces as these young thespians showcased their two original works.
