From the Head of Upper School

The Upper School (grades 9–12) offers an intellectually stimulating and engaging academic program. Through our progressive pedagogy, students learn by doing and acquire a wide range of relevant skills. Whether they are participating in a mock trial, designing and launching a rocket, or crafting an artistic piece, students are immersed in the critical thinking and collaborative work of the discipline. Each semester, students take five core classes with advanced-level options. They also select from a range of extracurricular classes and have the option to create their own independent study. We want our students to be intrinsically motivated and challenged. We also want them to be engaged citizens and leaders. Every student is a member of Student Government and attends regular plenary sessions and committee meetings. They also participate in Civic Lab, which includes cyclical meetings and fieldwork days. The themes vary per year from City as Ecosystem to City as Community to Social Reformation and, finally, May Term where seniors design and implement their own civic project. Outside of the classroom, students extend their learning through clubs, affinity groups, athletics, and performing arts - along with grade-level retreats, exchange programs, and national and international trips. Throughout their high school experience, students have an advisor and access to Learning Resource specialists, counselors, college counselors, in-house tutors, and peer helpers. We fully support them in their journey of becoming worldly citizens, thoughtful leaders, and life-long learners.
