Joan W. Harris Visiting Music Scholar in Residence

9th Annual Visiting Music Scholar in Residence

Third Coast Percussion
Thursday, May 14 | 7 p.m.

In the 9th year of the Joan W. Harris Visiting Music Scholar in Residence program, Parker is excited to welcome it’s first percussion group as part of this visiting scholar series: Third Coast Percussion! Third Coast Percussion is a GRAMMY® Award-winning Chicago-based percussion quartet and GRAMMY®-nominated composer collective that made history as the first percussion ensemble to win the revered music award in the classical genre. For 20 years, the ensemble has forged a unique path in the musical landscape with virtuosic, energetic performances that celebrate the extraordinary depth and breadth of musical possibilities in the world of percussion. The ensemble has been praised for “commandingly elegant” (New York Times) performances, the “rare power” (Washington Post) of their recordings and “an inspirational sense of fun and curiosity” (Minnesota Star-Tribune).

Percussion has been used by disparate cultures around the world for millennia—likely providing humanity’s first true outlet into musical expression. Percussion’s fundamental connection to rhythm, movement and pulse, predates complex musical structures and powerfully reflects our intimate, powerful and necessary connection with music. The members of Third Coast Percussion are accomplished teachers who, as part of their residency, will present the exciting, complex and dynamic world of percussion music to our students. While at Parker, the group will work with our students across all divisions, they will share their work in school assemblies, lead workshops for Parker percussion students and present an evening concert that will feature an eclectic mix of classic and contemporary composers—everything from Phillip Glass to Musekiwa Chingodza!

Please join us for this can’t miss event!

The Joan W. Harris Visiting Music Scholar in Residence program was established to provide experiences for students to find inspiration, learn, appreciate and understand the transformative power of classical music. Members of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center worked with the school as our inaugural visiting artists in 2017 followed by the Chicago Opera Theater, The Westerlies, Kontras Quartet and Chicago a cappella.
Francis W. Parker School educates students to think and act with empathy, courage and clarity as responsible citizens and leaders in a diverse democratic society and global community.
