Administrators of Color Conference Returns In Person
Parker recently hosted more than 70 senior administrators of color for a day and a half of connection and learning as part of the 2023 Administrators of Color in Independent Schools Conference.
Opening night guests attended a welcome reception and dinner and heard remarks from keynote speaker Stephanie Foo, the 2019–20 Rosalynn Carter Mental Health Fellow, radio journalist, producer and author of the book What My Bones Know.
The next day included more camaraderie, socialization and sharing by keynote speakers Caleb Gayle, award-winning journalist and author of We Refuse to Forget, and Donovan Livingston, award-winning educator, spoken word poet and author of “Lift Off,” in addition to breakout affinity groups by role.
While at the event, Livingston tweeted, “What an experience @fwparker school today?!? Using #HipHop to build community w educators of color in racially homogenous schools is soul-enlivening. Thank y’all for your wisdom, your light, & wielding those gifts to speak truth to power & guide students toward justice! #HipHopEd”
Assistant Principal Priyanka Rupani was instrumental in organizing this year’s ACISC, which returned to an in-person format and marked the fifth occurrence of this annual event, which welcomed representatives of color from schools such DePaul College Prep, Francis Parker in San Diego, Friends School of Baltimore, University School of Nashville and more. More than 30 schools participated in the event, spanning 13 states from the West Coast to the East Coast and many places between.
Reflecting upon the success of this year’s event, Rupani shared, “Having guests reconnect in person this year felt like a homecoming. There was joy, positive energy and a genuine desire to learn from one another. Many participants shared that the day and a half ‘filled their cups,’ and it definitely filled mine, too!”
We look forward to another in-person gathering of Administrators of Color in Independent Schools on October 19 and 20, 2023!
