Connecting Clinical Psychology to the Classroom
Upper School students in science teacher Bridget Lesinski’s Topics in Psychology course spend a semester examining the biological basis of behavior and topics including sensation and perception, consciousness, sleep, memory, cognition, development, nature vs. nurture and psychological disorders.
To help her students better appreciate how development, their current topic of study, connects with real-world practice, Lesinski invited Parker parent, alum and Lower School Counselor Kaela Rowe ’89 to speak about her background and role as a clinical psychologist.
At this gathering, Rowe explained her educational trajectory and how she arrived back at Parker in the Counseling Department. The students were fascinated by the many different settings in which one can practice and also learned about the difference between a clinical degree and a more research-based approach. Lesinski said, “Kaela was funny and warm as she shared examples of child development. Students asked great questions, and many left with a better idea of possible career paths.”
