Nuclear Policy Experts Discuss with Parker Physics Students

On Wednesday, March 27, Parker welcomed two experts from Harris School of Public Policy at University of Chicago, Dr. Kennette Benedict and her student, Hosoi Tomohiro, both experts in nuclear policy.

Dr. Benedict previously was the publisher of Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. Hosoi, who worked for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in the Japanese government in the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear accident, presented some background information about the accident and extensive information on the reconstruction of the affected area by the Japanese government and its energy policy regarding nuclear power.

Physics students are working on a persuasive essay addressing whether Japan should restart more nuclear power plants. Hosoi’s presentation provided a perspective that is not widely reported in the United States. This is the third year Science Department faculty Elizabeth Druger, Xiao Zhang and George Austin collaborated with Dr. Benedict to bring together students from their respective classes to consider important issues related to nuclear policy.
