Melanie Nutter ’89 Encourages Students to Find their Passion
On Monday, February 10, Parker welcomed Melanie Nutter, a proud member of the class of 1989 as well as a new Parker parent, to present at Morning Ex.
Her message to our students was clear—find your passion and go for it! She learned this advice herself while she was a Parker student. She talked about how her education gave her courage to create change, with support from her teachers.
As principal of Nutter Consulting, a boutique consultancy providing strategic planning services to advance smart and sustainable city goals, Nutter is passionate about her career. She served as the director of the San Francisco Department of the Environment from 2010 through 2014. During her tenure, San Francisco was named the Greenest City in North America. From 2005 through 2010, she served as deputy district director for U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
During her presentation, Nutter spoke about the importance of doing what you can to help the environment. She discussed the benefits of recycling, composting and using alternative ways to travel to school. “Instead of driving every day, pick a few days to ride your bike, walk or take the CTA,” she suggested. After several questions from teachers and students, Nutter ended her talk with a quote by Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
