Poet Kate Baer Visits Parker’s Writing Studio

Students in Alicia Abood’s Writer's Studio class recently attended an intimate virtual gathering with poet Kate Baer, who shared three poems from her new book What Kind of Woman and fielded student questions about her craft and process.

Baer provided Parker’s young writers with practical advice and her personal wisdom on how one can become a writer. When asked if there was anything she wished she had known as a young adult before heading into the world, she encouraged students to take advantage of all sorts of different experiences and be willing to meet all types of people.

Reflecting upon the experience, Abood shared, “Baer’s a writer who also happens to be very real, warm and genuine in her approach with others. She didn’t get her M.F.A., and, as a mother to four young children, she doesn’t have hours of free time, but she somehow makes the time to write anyway. I think we can all learn something about commitment and practice from her.”

All involved—teachers and students alike—left with more to bring to their writing.
