Student Artists Shine at Art Night

Parker Upper School Art students recently orchestrated an after-school event combining visual art and spoken word poetry to showcase young creators at Parker. 

NAHS Art Night featured drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, film, mixed media, collage, digital media and slam poetry produced by Upper School students, as well as art activities, snacks and smiles to round out the fun. The event took place in the Flora J. Cooke Alcove and Kupcinet Gallery, ideal locations for end-of-day traffic and spectators arriving for the Jazz Band café later that evening.

The National Art Honor Society is a new Upper School club started by Art teacher Kay Silva that officially establishes a Parker chapter of this National Art Education Association-affiliated student organization. The intention of this art affinity group is to elevate advanced student artists to an “honors” level similar to that offered by the academic National Honor Society, with seniors receiving multicolored cords and tassels to wear at graduation.

There are currently 10 students in the club who meet weekly for artmaking, support, inspiration, collaboration and more and they hope to grow their numbers with time.

Organizers were happy with the success of this year’s inaugural event and look forward to future shows!
